A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags Pellow had mended nets for forty years before she tried to mend her grandson's sleep. Every night Tomas woke at the third bell shouting about a grey dog that stood at the foot of his bed, and every morning his mother found him curled under the kitchen table with his boots still on. Mags said nothing about it at first. She simply took the willow hoop from the boat shed, the one her husband had bent for the crab pots, and began to lace it.

She used the tarred twine Tomas had never got round to hauling in, and she wound it into a web as fine as the one under the chapel eaves. Between each crossing she tied a bead of sea glass, green and brown, the colour of the bottles that washed up along the harbour wall. When the apple tree in the lane shed its blossom she pressed five petals into the hoop so the web would smell of spring. Tomas watched from the step with his chin on his knees and asked what it was for.

"It catches what you don't want," she said. "The dog, the cold, the men who shout in the street. They get tangled and stay put, and the morning comes through the holes."

He hung it above his bed that night. At three o'clock the dog came, and Mags, awake in her chair downstairs, heard the boy say something soft and then sleep. In the morning the web held one grey moth with its wings torn, and a single gull feather, and nothing else. Mags lifted the moth out with two fingers, carried it down to the tide, and put the feather in the tin with the spare buttons.
