A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gap in the wall at Hollin Lodge is the width of a wheelbarrow, and every August you stand in it at ten o'clock with the old watering can, though the beds are already wet with dew. Mrs Pargeter swore the moon tipped its own water down onto the border each night, and that a gardener's job was only to notice where it had landed.

You noticed the red valerian first, the one that always leaned towards the hedge. Then the blue lobelia under the sundial, its leaves gone the colour of old bottle glass. Mrs Pargeter had planted them in the hollow of a crescent bed she cut into the lawn the year her husband died, and she never said why its curve faced the house instead of the sky.

The night she went into the hospice in Ilkley, you pushed the barrow down the lane with a flask, a trowel and a packet of seed in your coat. You knelt where the crescent's point met the path and pressed the seed in with your thumb, the way she had taught you, and said her name into the dark. It felt foolish until a moth settled on the back of your hand and stayed.

By September the blue flowers had spread along the curve and the red one had climbed the sundial's stone. You never told her, though the nurse said she asked after the garden every morning. You simply wheeled the barrow to the gap at ten, tipped the can, and watched the moon find the wet earth first.
