Black cat and blue flower on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black cat with large round white eyes sits behind a five-petalled blue flower with a dark centre, surrounded by green leaves. The bold black outlines and flat, solid fills are typical of traditional tattooing, with a small red accent behind the cat. The tattoo is centred on the skin with plenty of space around it, and the image is sharp with even lighting.

The cat came aboard at Lowestoft in a fish crate, and by the time we reached the Dogger Bank she had claimed the hatch cover above the engine room as her own. Mags said she was bad luck. Mags said most things were bad luck, including the colour of the wheelhouse paint, so I didn't argue. Black as a coal sack she was, with two round eyes like florins somebody had pressed into her face.

We worked the Silver Pit in March with the wind backing north and the decks glazed to a skin of ice. The skipper kept the wireless low and the cat kept to the lee of the winch, leaving it only when the cook dropped a scrap of haddock. On the Thursday we hauled a trawl so heavy the warp sang, and in the lamplight I saw a patch of blue wedged in the mesh. It was a shard of enamel from some sunk wreck, a five-petalled flower painted on it, the paint gone soft at the middle. Nobody wanted it. I put it in my oilskin pocket and forgot it until we were tied up.

Back in Grimsby the wind had dropped and the gulls were fighting over the offcuts on the quay. Mags stood at the gangway with her arms folded and watched the cat strut down ahead of the rest of us, tail up like a question mark. I took the enamel flower out, rinsed it in the galley sink, and set it on a bollard where she could see it. She sniffed it, sneezed, and sat down beside it as if she had been waiting the whole trip for someone to bring her a flower.
