Crescent moon with hibiscus flowers

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn tattoo design of a crescent moon with three hibiscus flowers resting on its upper left curve. The moon's lower band is filled with diagonal hatching, triangular zigzags and stippled dots, while the flower petals use fine shading and dotted texture. The design is rendered in brown ink on a pale sheet, with a pen lying across the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moon had hung thin over the reef for three nights before Tavita's mother agreed to let him take the outrigger past the break. She said a moon that thin would feed nobody, but she tied a red hibiscus behind his ear anyway, plucked from the hedge by the cookhouse, because her own mother had done the same for every man who went out in the dark of the month.

Out past the breakers the water went black and smooth as oiled wood. The crescent sat low on the horizon, its lower rim banded with stripes and little teeth, like the edge of a good mat his aunt had woven. Where the horns curled up, three flowers had caught on the point and hung there, their petals shading from pale to rust. Tavita paddled toward them until the outrigger knocked against the reef and the current turned him slowly, the way a dog turns before it lies down.

He swung the net at the nearest flower. It came up heavy and dripping, and when he lifted it into the lantern light there were no fish, only the three hibiscus blooms, fresh as the hedge at noon, with dew still in their throats. The moon above him had gone round and full in the water, and it dipped its curve toward the boat as if to take something back.

He came in before dawn and set the flowers on the mat. His mother looked at them, then at the grey sea, and said nothing for a long time. In the morning he took one of the blooms down to the lagoon and laid it on the water, and the moon, still pale in the sky, leaned a little closer to see it.
