Mandala crescent moon tattoo

Dotwork · Black and grey · Photo

A crescent moon is filled with intricate mandala and floral ornament in black linework and dotwork shading, set on plain skin. The centre panel shows the full moon against a soft, pale background, while the two side panels show close-up details of the mandala pattern. The ink is solid black and grey with no colour, and the design sits neatly within the crescent shape.

Pass me that flask and mind the stair, it's slick with spray, and don't go telling your mother I let you up here after dark. Sit where the lamp can reach you. There. My father kept this light before me, and his father before him, and every one of them swore the moon over the Minch was once a sheet of linen stitched by a woman who couldn't sleep.

Her name was Mairi Tallis, and she lived in the cottage below the cliff where the path goes soft. She sewed for the fishermen's wives. In the evenings, when the men were mending nets, she sat by the window with a needle and pricked the cloth, dot by dot, until the whole square was freckled like a gull's egg. Then she drew rosettes inside rosettes, flower inside flower, all of it in ink so fine you had to hold the cloth to the candle to see it. Folk thought she was making a shroud. She wasn't. She was making a moon.

Then the gale came in off the water, the kind that takes the glass clean out of the lantern. Her husband Donald was out past the reef with the Sheila May. Mairi climbed these stairs with that cloth in her arms and hung it over the gallery rail, and the wind took hold of it and stretched it out, every dot and spoke of it lifting like a hand. The lamp caught in those thousand little holes. Light came through them in pinpricks, and out there in the dark the boats saw the way home.

Donald came in at dawn. The cloth tore to rags by the new year, but on a clear night, look up. You'll see the pricks still there in the edge of the moon, every one of them burning. Now off you go before the tide turns, and don't look down at the water on your way.
