Crochet-style flower motif on an arm

Geometric · Other · Colour · Photo

A symmetrical flower or rosette design is shown with a central blue ring of stitch marks, surrounded by rings of green and red stitch symbols, purple chain-like arcs and dotted lines. The motif resembles a crochet chart, with small x marks and T-shaped stitches arranged in radial rows. Fine coloured linework sits on smooth skin against a plain light background, and the design fills the frame.

The chart had been folded so many times that the creases had gone soft as cloth, and Marisol pinned it flat against the steering wheel with one palm while the car ticked over on the shoulder of the A-road that ran out past the salt flats. Nothing else moved for miles. A heat shimmer lifted the tarmac into a grey lake that never got any nearer.

Her aunt Dorrie had crocheted from memory for forty years and never once written a pattern down, so the thing in her hand made no sense at first. Rings of little crosses, green ones and red ones, stitched around a blue hub like the spokes of a wheel. Dotted lines ran out to the edge, where tiny x marks sat in pairs, as if someone had counted the stitches and then, bored, started counting something else. In the margin, in pencil, Dorrie had written: Start at the centre. Do not hurry the middle.

Marisol laughed for the first time since the funeral, a short cough of a laugh that the empty road swallowed. She pulled back onto the tarmac and drove with the chart on the passenger seat, the blue ring catching the light through the windscreen. At the next petrol station she bought a hook and a ball of cotton the colour of sand, and sat on the kerb under a sign reading Last Fuel 90 Miles, working the first round by feel.

By dusk she had a flower the size of a saucer, lopsided and perfect. She held it up against the orange sky and understood that her aunt had been drawing the way home one stitch at a time, and had left the last ring blank on purpose.
