Red mandala tattoo on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A single symmetrical mandala, built from red linework with small dotted accents along its outer points, sits at the centre of the frame. The fine, repeating scrolls and loops radiate outward from a central star-like motif. The tattoo is a single red ink against pale skin, with a dark background framing the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The loom in the Kestrel Ring has been silent since the water tanks froze, so you work by hand on the bench under the port, using the red thread Ama left in the locker. Nobody on Ring Four trusts a dye that doesn't come from the hydroponic beds, but the madder root grew well this season, and you boiled it down until the kitchen smelled of rust and pepper.

The pattern is one your grandmother taught you on paper: a wheel of eight points, each tipped with a teardrop and a bead of dots where the thread doubles back. She said a mandala was a map of a room you had not yet walked into. You draw it outward from the centre, a small star at the hub, loops spilling into scrolls, and you do not hurry, because the thread is short and the knots are the only thing the children on the lower decks can still read.

On the ninth night the signal from Tessaly comes in again, three clicks and a hum, and the council sends word that the transfer ships will dock at the far lock. You fold the lace over the bench so the outer points show, the little dotted tips catching the lamp. Ama's daughter stands in the hatch with her boots in her hands and asks whether the pattern is a door.

You tell her yes, and that it opens only from the inside. You pin the finished piece to the wall beside the airlock so that anyone leaving will have to pass the red wheel, every point turned toward the dark, and then you go back to the thread and start the next one.
