Cross and Romans 12:2 script lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo shows a bold, slightly uneven cross with the script words Romans 12:2 running beneath and across it. The cross has thick, blocky strokes, while the script has a fine, flowing hand with a decorative capital R. The ink is solid black on warm, tan-toned skin, and the photograph is a close crop centred on the design.

The snow had sealed the lane to Hebden Moor for nine days when Mrs Ada Pell pressed the parchment into my hand and told me to read it slowly, for it was the last thing her brother Tobias would ever send anyone. I was the only lad in the Crossed Keys with a steady hand and a lamp that did not gutter, so the job fell to me. The letter was short. He wrote that the cross on the ridge had split in the gale of Candlemas, and that he had carried the beam down himself on his back, one stubborn mile after another, because the verse his father had carved beneath it was still legible and he would not leave it to the crows.

The verse was Romans twelve and two, and the scribe in me noticed the flourish on the capital R before I noticed the words. Be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind. Tobias had written, underneath, that he had spent three winters arguing that line with the vicar, and had lost every time, and had come to think the vicar was only half wrong.
When the thaw came I walked up with Ada to see what he had made of it. The beam was propped against the wall of the chapel, the blocky strokes still raw where he had shaved the damp from them, and beneath the cross, scratched fine into the grey board, the old script ran on across the wood as though it had never been broken at all.
