Small cross on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small upright cross is tattooed on the inner wrist, with the hand curled loosely at the top of the frame. The cross is drawn in thin, even linework with no shading, and the ink appears pale against the skin. The plain red backdrop contrasts with the skin tones and keeps the focus on the small design.

Dear Marion, the tide took the second theodolite on Tuesday, so you can tell Father the survey is now a fortnight behind and I am not sorry about it. Mr Ferrier has been sulking in the boathouse since. He says the mainland office will want the benchmarks marked whatever the weather, so I have been up on the north shelf with a copper punch and a tin of white paint, cutting crosses into the granite wherever the old chart insists there ought to be one.

There is a cross already on Hollin Stack, worn nearly smooth, which the islanders say a drowned minister put there. Nobody on the boat will tell me which minister. I checked it against the sightline from the church tower and it is three inches out, which I have decided to forgive. The fishermen touch it as they pass, and I have started doing the same, which I know you will find absurd.
Yesterday the mist came down before I had finished the fourth mark. I sat on the rock with the punch in my lap, listening to the bell buoy knock out of time. A girl from the cottages came up the path with a bucket of mussels and stopped to watch. She asked whether I was marking where people would drown. I said no, only where the land stopped being where the map said it was. She considered this and asked if I could chalk one on the bow of her uncle's boat so she would know where home was when the fog came in. I said I would think about it, and I am still thinking.
Tell Father the chart will be finished by spring. I will bring it home rolled inside my coat, dry as a biscuit. Love, Thomas.
