Cross, heartbeat and heart on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black cross runs into a black heartbeat trace, which then forms a red outlined heart on the right. The words FAITH, HOPE and LOVE sit in small black capitals beneath the design. The linework is clean and fairly thin, with the heart in red and the cross and lettering in black, on a forearm photographed against a dark background.

The printer on the cardiac unit at St Aidan's had jammed again, so Maureen Tanner fed the paper strips through by hand at ten past three, the way she had every night since the new monitors arrived and nobody thought to fix the old ones. Bed nine was the one she kept glancing at. Wendell Price had been awake since midnight, insisting that the nurses stop calling him Mr Price and start calling him Wend, and his daughter had gone home at one with a promise to come back by seven.

Before she left, the daughter had pressed a crumpled ward leaflet into Maureen's hand. On the back, in careful black capitals, someone had written FAITH, HOPE, LOVE, and then, underneath, a small wobbly heart. Wend had asked for it read aloud twice. He said the words sounded like a shop sign he used to pass on the Headingley road, long closed, where a man sold hymn books and paraffin. Maureen had read them out in her steadiest voice and he had laughed, which set the monitor climbing.
At half past four the line flattened into a long grey plain and stayed there. Maureen sat with him, the way the training said to, and listened to the corridor lights hum. When the registrar came through at five she handed over the chart and, almost as an afterthought, the last strip off the printer. It showed the ragged spikes of the night, then a clean rise like a hand lifting, and a single bright peak at the very end.
She folded it twice and tucked it into the back of the ward log, next to the leaflet with its three words and its lopsided heart, and went to find the kettle.
