Faith lettering with cross on wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo spells the word faith in flowing teal script with a small cross sitting above the final letter. The linework is thin and even, with the teal ink softly shaded in places. The wrist fills the centre of the frame, with a dark carpet and wooden panelling in the background.

Now you sit down, and you listen, because my knees will not carry me to the well any more and I will not have you fidgeting. Your great-aunt Ida had a garden behind the chapel at Thornleigh, and in it grew a single teal-blue hydrangea that nobody could coax to colour the same way twice. Some summers it came up pale as skimmed milk. Other years it turned the shade of a kingfisher's back. The vicar said it was the soil. Ida said it was the weather of the heart, which is the sort of thing Ida said.

The spring the blacksmith's boy went off to the navy, Ida stood at the garden gate every evening with a trowel in one hand and a letter in the other, reading it aloud to the bush because she could not read it to him. Nothing came back from the coast for eleven months. She kept watering. She cut a small wooden cross from a broken pew rail and pushed it into the bed at the foot of the hydrangea, and she said, to nobody, that the cross was for the boy and the word was for her.
When the letter finally came, it was only one line, scratched in a hand that shook: still here. Ida went out at dusk with the paper pressed to her chest and found the hydrangea had gone the deepest blue it had ever been, almost green at the edges, as if it had drunk up every bit of waiting in the parish. She cut one head for the altar and left the rest standing.
That is all the story there is, though people will tell you different. Mind your feet on the step going out, and mind the cross, it is older than your mother.
