Black fine line tattoo on a forearm of an outlined heart joined to a heartbeat line that runs into the cursive word faith.

Heartbeat line and faith script on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line tattoo shows an outlined heart on the left, connected by a heartbeat trace to the cursive word faith on the right. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the ink sits on a smooth area of forearm skin. The design runs horizontally across the centre of a close-up photograph against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Melas pressed two fingers to the boy's wrist and waited for the water clock to drip. Down in the cellar beneath the Serapeum the lamp smoked, and the couch creaked under the child's restless weight. Theon had taught him to count for one full measure, then count again, because a physician who trusted a single number would soon be a physician with no patients left.

Melas unrolled a strip of papyrus across his knee and, with a reed dipped in soot ink, drew each beat as a sharp rise above a flat run. The marks came quickly at first, then bunched, then spread out again like a wake settling behind a boat. Theon leaned over his shoulder and grunted. "You draw the heart like a mountain range. Draw what it does, not what you fear it will do."

The mother stood in the doorway with her hands knotted in her shawl. She had not been allowed to come closer, and she could not have stayed away. "Is it still going?" she asked. Melas did not look up. "Yes, mother. Steady now, and slower than before." He pressed the reed to the end of the strip and, beside the last spike, wrote the Greek word for trust in small, careful letters, then drew a loop at its tail.

Theon read the word and raised one eyebrow. "You have written trust beside a pulse." Melas rolled the papyrus carefully so the spikes ran off the edge of the strip and kept going, and the boy's pulse kept going under his fingers, unhurried and unbroken.
