Fine line black tattoo on the inner wrist showing an infinity symbol with a cross on the left loop and the word faith in script, with a small heart above the i.

Faith script with infinity symbol and cross on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black outline of an infinity symbol loops around a solid black Latin cross on the left and flows into the lowercase word faith in cursive script. A small heart sits above the i, and the design is set against pale skin on the inner wrist. The linework is crisp and even, with no shading, and the composition is centred on the wrist.

Sit down, the lot of you, the urn hasn't boiled and Gwen won't tell it twice. You all remember Miss Tallis, who taught us our letters in the room over the bakery. She kept a length of bell rope coiled behind her door, and she said it was the only thing in Ashby that never ended, because you could follow it round the tower and back to the same knot.

The winter the bells cracked, the vicar sent young Ellis Marr up the tower to splice the rope. Ellis was nine years older than us and had come back from the sea with torn hands and a bad temper. He sat on the lowest step and swore that faith was just a word people painted on signboards to sell tea. Miss Tallis went out with a tin of lamp black and a brush, and wrote it on the churchyard wall in a looping hand, with a cross where the knot was. Ellis laughed at her for a week.

Then the rain came in sideways and the north boat was four hours late. Ellis took the rope up the tower alone in the dark, and the bells rang the whole night so the boat could find its way round the point. In the morning the rope was black with his blood, and the little heart she had drawn above the i on the wall was still dry as a bone. Nobody ever said which of them had painted it.

So when you pull a bell in this village, mind which way you go. It comes back to where it started, every time. Now, who's got the biscuits?
