Agnes Holloway had kept the drum recorder in the bell tower of St Cuthbert's for nineteen years, and every Tuesday she climbed the spiral stair with a flask of tea and a fresh roll of paper. Her nephew Danny thought the machine was a museum piece. He came up the stairs one wet evening in March, shoulders dripping, and found her bent over the paper with a magnifying glass. "You're not going to tell me it's dancing," he said. She wasn't. She was tracing a run of small peaks, three quick spikes and a slow hump, then a long flat pause before the pen rose into one clean climb that levelled off like a held breath.
"Somebody's pulse," she said. "Ground's got one, same as anything." He laughed, then stopped, because she had taken a pencil and drawn a small cross in the margin, the way her mother used to mark the parish register when a name came in.
At the far end of the trace she drew a heart, not a neat one, and wrote three words beneath it in the careful hand she'd learned at school. Danny read them over her shoulder. Faith, hope, love. "That's not a seismograph reading," he said. "No," said Agnes, and wound the paper back for the night.
