Cross, heartbeat and heart line design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a Latin cross on the left, linked by a single continuous line to a heartbeat-style trace that rises and falls before forming an open heart outline on the right. Beneath the image, the words FAITH, HOPE and LOVE are set in spaced capitals separated by small dots. The artwork uses even, single-weight black linework on a plain white background, with the composition centred and symmetrical.

Dear Ruth,

The ECG trace on the lad's phone was still going when the stretcher reached the lay-by at Bwlch y Gwynt, and I kept watching the green line jump as if it wanted to climb out of the screen. You'd have laughed at me. Forty years of hill walking and I still count the peaks under my breath, one, two, three, as if the mountain might lose its place.
Pete had the head end and didn't say a word the whole way down the scree. Rain came sideways off the ridge. Every time we slipped he swore at the rocks in Welsh, which he only does when he's frightened, and I thought of the little card your Aunt Mair gave us years ago, the one with a cross on it and a heartbeat wound through like wire. She said it was the whole of religion in one drawing. I told her it looked like a flatline with ambitions. She didn't speak to me until Christmas.
We reached the helicopter with the light nearly gone. The paramedic took one look at the trace, nodded once, and said, "There you are." That was all. Two words, and the line stayed up and rolling toward the hospital in Bangor.
I sat in the back of the van afterwards with my boots full of pass water and thought, that's faith, the ordinary kind. Not the cross. Just the next beat, and the one after, and somebody on the other end of the radio saying they've got you.
Love, Dafydd
