Cross, heartbeat and heart with Faith Hope Love

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A black line design shows a Latin cross on the left, joined by a heartbeat trace that rises and falls before forming an open heart outline on the right. The words FAITH, HOPE and LOVE sit beneath in spaced capitals separated by small dots. The linework is a single consistent weight in black on a pale background, with no shading or colour.

The officer at the Gretna checkpoint did not want to open the cool box, so I told him what was inside before he could ask. A donor heart, forty minutes out of a theatre in Carlisle, bound for a girl in Glasgow who had been on the list since March. He read my paperwork, then glanced at the clock above his desk as if it might be lying to him. Outside, the lorries idled with their headlamps on, and the rain made the tarmac shine like wet slate.

The portable monitor sat strapped beside me on the passenger seat, drawing its green line across the screen in the same peaks and dips the surgeon had shown me on a printout. My father taught me to read a trace years ago, on a dented machine in the back room of the chapel where he kept the bell ropes and the keys. A heart never lies, he used to say, it only tells the truth in a shape you have to learn. I was still learning. Every spike made me think of him, and every flat stretch made me count under my breath.

He looked at the cool box again, then at the seal, then stepped back and waved me through with the flat of his hand. 'Go on, then. Mind the bends past Annan.' I took the old road north, the one without cameras, and the sky began to lighten over the Solway while the screen kept its steady rhythm. Somewhere past Dumfries I found myself humming the hymn my father always whistled over the bell ropes, the one about being carried home.

At the hospital's loading bay a porter in blue scrubs took the box from me and signed my sheet without reading it. The monitor gave one last small rise, then settled back into its line. I sat in the cab with the engine ticking and watched the rain run down the windscreen, and for the first time since Carlisle I let my hands come off the wheel.
