Dear Jack, the frost has taken the apple tree by the back gate, the one you swore would never bear, and I haven't had the heart to cut it down. Mr Pryce from the mill came by on Tuesday with a sack of coal and asked after you. I said you were well, because that is what a letter says, even when it is three weeks old by the time it reaches the man reading it.

I have been sitting at the kitchen table with the lamp turned low, trying to set down what I still have to give. Faith I have, though it has worn as thin as the darn in your grandmother's good shawl. Hope I keep in the biscuit tin with the buttons, where I can get at it when the sums don't add up. And love, well, you know where that is without me writing it, but I'll write it anyway. I have put a small heart between each word, badly, the way you used to draw them on the slate when you were six and wanted to be a sign painter.
Each Thursday I walk down the lane to where the post cart turns, past the last of the beeches, and wait with my hands tucked in my apron. The carrier shakes his head before I've even reached the gate. I tell him I know, and I walk back up through the wood the long way, past the stump where you carved your initials and then pretended you hadn't.
So this one goes with the usual stamp. I've pressed a violet from the wood's edge inside the fold, though it has gone flat and brown and looks like nothing much. Come home when the lilac is out. The back gate still hangs on one hinge, and I'll be standing at it with the kettle on, the way I always am.
