Crossed fingers holding a cigarette
Black and grey · Flash
A bold black silhouette of a hand with two fingers crossed, a cigarette tucked between them and a wisp of smoke rising above. White linework picks out the knuckles, creases and a small anchor on one finger, and the lettering around the hand reads LUCK GOT THING WITH AIN'T A DAMN TO DO IT! The drawing is flat black ink on a plain off-white ground with no shading or colour.

Dear Mags,

You'll laugh, but I've started keeping the crossed fingers going like a rosary. Every time the 6.40 pulls out of Crewe with nobody on it but me and the pigeons, I hold two fingers together behind my back and wait for the whistle. Mr Okonedo on the ticket barrier says it's superstition. I say it's engineering.
Yesterday a lad came off the Liverpool train with a cigarette behind his ear and a suitcase held shut with a belt. He asked me where left luggage was, then asked if I had a light. I lit it for him off my own match and he smoked it stood under the clock, looking up at the board where the platform numbers flick over as if they can't make up their minds. He said his mam had told him luck was a loan you paid back with interest. I said mine had told me the same, and that she'd been wrong about the interest.
He got on the 4.10 to Carlisle with his belt, his cigarette and a pocket full of my tea sugar. I haven't seen him since. The lost property tray has a ticket in it with his name on the back, unclaimed, so I suppose he is still going.
Anyway, the tea's stewed and the kettle's on the hook. Tell Dad the luck he left us has run out, and I've stopped waiting for the post to bring more.
Love, Sandra
