Crossed lightsabers with a teal bow
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two lightsabers, one purple and one pink, cross behind a teal bow with a pink heart at its centre, all surrounded by small sparkling stars and dots. The words THE FORCE IS WITH ME sit beneath in black lettering, which has a hand-drawn quality. Bold dark outlines and soft shading give the pastel colours a bright, cartoon-like finish.

The Starlite Rooms on a Saturday smelled of Brut and floor polish, and by ten the sprung boards were already bouncing. Dennis, who ran the decks from a box at the back with a tea towel over the turntable, had turned up with two plastic lightsabers from the Woolworths bargain bin, one purple and one pink, batteries still taped on. Nobody could say why he'd bought them. He said he'd been saving them for something.

Maureen Pratt arrived at half nine in a teal satin bow pinned at the back of her head, as wide as a dinner plate, and asked whether anyone had seen her gloves. I had them in the cloakroom, folded inside a biscuit tin. When I handed them over she gripped my wrist and said, "Tell Dennis to get the lights going, for heaven's sake." He did. The lamps turned purple, somebody got the pink stick humming, and soon half the hall was waving them over their heads like sparklers on Bonfire Night.
At quarter to eleven the floor cleared for the last slow number. Maureen and Terry Hague stood in the middle, crossed their two sticks above their heads, and the whole room roared. The glitter ball caught the light and threw little stars across the walls, and for three minutes the Starlite was not a damp building on Lynn Street but somewhere everything fitted together.
Terry went home with a head cold. Maureen came back every Saturday after that, bow and all, and each week I found the sticks propped by the cloakroom door, waiting for someone to ask for them. I still keep the pink one in my handbag. It doesn't do anything. It just makes me stand up a little straighter when the music starts.
