Ornate key with watercolour splashes on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A slender ornate key runs diagonally along the forearm, with its bow and shaft outlined in black linework. Soft blue, pink and green washes spread behind and beneath the key, with loose splashes and drips around it. The design sits in the centre of the frame against a pale door and teal background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The orchard gate had been locked since the spring frost, and nobody in Hollin Vale could agree who held the key. Old Maud said the miller's boy had swallowed it. The vicar said it had gone into the river with the christening water. Eliza Tranter, who was nine and fond of facts, said it was hanging on a nail on the far side of the wall, and she would prove it by climbing.

She went at the back end of August, when the Bramleys and the russets hung heavy and the wasps were drunk on windfalls. The wall was higher than it looked. At the top she found the key on its nail, its bow worked with curls like frost on a pane and its shaft as thin as a knitting needle. When she lifted it, her fingers came away stained, blue as plums and pink as rosehip syrup, and the stain would not wash off in the stream below.

Inside, the trees were older than anyone's record. Each one had a tin tag tied to a low branch with a name scratched into it. Eliza found her great-aunt Ada's tag, rusted through, and beside it a bare branch where no tag yet hung. She understood then that the orchard kept its count, and that the key was only a way of letting it be read.

She unlocked the gate from the inside, and the bolt slid back with a sound like a held breath let go. Then she hung the key on its nail again, dripping colour onto the stones. When her mother asked where she had been, Eliza held up her blue hands and said the gate was open now, and the fruit on the far side was ready for anyone tall enough to reach it.
