Small black fine line tattoo of crossed lines with circles and short bars on the ankle, next to a red and multicoloured braided bracelet.

Crossed lines and loops on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of two long diagonal lines crossing each other, with two open circles and a short bar with dots on the crossing branches. The linework is clean and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The photo shows the ankle from a slight angle against a dark plastic-covered surface, with a grey sock pulled down and a braided bracelet in red and other colours above the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the Tern is tied up below Hale Lock and the rain has been coming sideways since Tuesday, so forgive the smudge. Dad's old mark is still scratched into the lock beam where he left it: two rods crossed like a pair of dividers, a ring at each end for the mooring lines, and the little bar with its two bolts that he always said held everything together.

The lock-keeper, a long-faced man called Orrin Pell, asked me this morning whose it was. I told him it was ours, which is the truth, though I didn't mention that the rings were for the lines we never could keep tight in a flood. He just nodded and said the water remembers who was careless with a rope. I have decided he is a fool, but he has a kettle and he lets me use it.

I went down with the rubbing kit Mam packed and took the mark off the beam in soft grey wax, the way she used to with the church brasses. It came out clean on the paper, even the dot on the bar. I've pinned it above the stove. When the Tern comes through Pennington next month I'll bring it to you, and you can tell me which of us was careless with the rope.

Love, Bea
