Small finger tattoo beside gemstone rings

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a person's hands, one near the chest and the other holding long dark hair, wearing silver rings with black and pale gemstones. A small, fine grey tattoo sits on the side of one finger, partly shadowed and close to the ring. Muted tones, shallow depth of field and dark foliage in the foreground give the photo a moody, natural feel.

The moonstones came up from Ceylon in a tin lined with wool, and Mags Harrow counted them twice before she let me touch the tray. Twelve pale ovals, each the colour of skimmed milk when the lamp caught it. Her husband had cut the last of the blue ones the winter he died, and she had never cut another since. She said setting was a kind of keeping, and that a stone wanted a good frame more than a good polish.

The onyx was for a Bristol man who wanted mourning rings for his two sons, cut in teardrops so they would sit close on the finger and never catch on a sleeve. Mags filed each edge herself and would not let me hurry the bezels. When the rings were done she pressed a grey oak leaf into the warm wax of each box, the way her husband had, so that whoever opened the lid would know whose hands had made the thing.

A boy from the next valley came up the lane on the second Thursday with a rough grey pebble in his fist. He had found it in a hedge bank, he said, and it had a crack that looked like a moth. Mags turned it over under the lamp for a long time and then told him it was not for sale. He went off down the lane looking cheated, and she did not explain.

On the last night of the month she set the largest moonstone in a band of old silver and cut one small leaf on the inside of the shank, where no one would see it but the one who wore it. Then she left the lamp burning on the bench so the stone could take in whatever light it wanted before the morning.
