Crossed wands with hearts on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two crossed wands, each with a heart-shaped gem and a crown-like tip, in teal and blue with pale highlights. The wands have grey-blue shafts with pink-tinted ends and bold dark outlines, and the design sits centrally on the lower leg. The photograph is framed by a heart-shaped overlay with a pale green background, and partial tattoos are visible at the top edge.

Dear Marguerite,

The wands came back from the lacquerer this morning, and I have spent the whole afternoon trying to get the gems to sit straight. You will remember the order from the Coldharbour Players, two rods for the Midsummer tableau, heart-cut stones on top and a crown at each tip so the lamps catch them from the quay. I thought them ridiculous when Mr Pell brought the drawings in. Now I am not so sure.

Tuesday's rehearsal was the trouble. Laid crosswise on the stage, the two rods gave off a faint ringing, like a wet finger round the rim of a glass, and the hanging lanterns swung without any wind. Pell swore the boards were loose. I had the stagehands lift the floor and found nothing but mouse nests and a rusted spring. So I took the wands home, and last night I laid them crossed on my kitchen table, and the stones went the colour of the sea just before a squall.

I shan't send them to the pageant. I have wrapped them in oilcloth and put them on the high shelf beside your old sextant, next to the tide tables. Some things are only meant to be seen once, I think, and then kept.

Write soon, and tell me whether the ferry still runs on Thursdays.

Yours, Ada
