Sisters heart hands tattoo
Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two cartoon-style gloved hands meeting to form a heart shape, with the word Sisters written in thin script inside the heart. The design is drawn in bold black outlines with no shading, and the lettering is a lighter line within the heart. Three close-up photographs of the same tattoo are arranged in a collage, with one panel showing the design at a different angle.

The gloves had been Mum's idea, bought from a market stall in Margate for a penny more than they were worth, and by the time Nell was nine they had gone grey at the knuckles and the left thumb had come unstitched. Every night the two of them knelt under a bedsheet with a torch and pressed their hands together until the shadow on the ceiling was a heart with a crooked edge. It was the only thing in the house Dad never complained about.

Thirty years on, the ceiling had a water stain shaped like Ireland and the house was going to a couple from Leeds who wanted the keys by Friday. Ruth found the shoebox under the stairs and held it up like evidence. Nell said they were rubbish, a choking hazard, and Ruth said she was being a cow, and they went at it for twenty minutes over who would keep the gloves, until they both admitted neither of them wanted to be the one who threw them out.
So they did it once more. They hung the sheet over the banister of the empty upstairs room, Ruth on the torch because her hands shook, Nell on the gloves because her hands were steadier and always had been. The heart came out lopsided, the way it always had, and Ruth laughed so hard she dropped the torch and it rolled under the radiator. In the dark the shape stayed on the plaster for a second anyway, two old gloves holding one small shape, before they both gave up and found the light switch.
They left the gloves on the windowsill, where the streetlamp could still find them, and went out to wait for the taxi.
