Mrs Okafor who runs the counter has given me three refills and a look that says she knows exactly what a man does when he is waiting for a train that isn't coming.

You asked me last week why I never finish a sentence about us without drawing something on it. Well, here is the drawing. I did it on the napkin while the kettle boiled, the heart first, then the loop went through it the way your thumb went through my belt loop on the platform at Headingley. I have not got it quite right. The lines wobble. But I kept thinking that a heart is only ever a shape until somebody decides to carry it somewhere, and an infinity sign is only a sum until it has a person in it.

I am coming up on the first train tomorrow, the 6.12, if the rails hold. Don't bother making toast. Just leave the back door on the latch, and if you are still asleep I will sit on the step and count the bricks in the wall until the light comes up over the allotments.
