Crown and Gemini script on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded crown with a fleur-de-lis finial sits above the word Gemini written in a flowing script. The crown uses smooth grey shading, dark outlines and small dot details along its arches. The tattoo is centred on the forearm, photographed against a tiled background.

The crown would not fit either of them, so the goldsmith in Harrowgate filed its arches down twice, once for each head, and still it sat crooked. Old Maud said the silver had been poured from two moulds that never agreed on anything, which suited a palace where the twins had quarrelled since the cradle. Ysolde was born a breath before Corin, and by the old northern rule that breath made her queen. Corin was given the stables, the hounds and a ledger of debts he could not read without a candle.

He stole the crown on the eve of the midwinter fair and carried it down to the river with a crucible from the forge. He meant to melt the fleur-de-lis into a coin he could spend in the port towns, where nobody asked whose profile was stamped on it. The coals were hot and the metal was ready, but when he lifted the finial over the glow he saw his own face in the grey shine of the band, the studded arches catching the lamplight like rain on a window, and he could not let it go in.
Ysolde found him on the bank at first light, her hem soaked to the knee. She sat beside him without a word and took the crown from his lap. They argued until the frost went off the reeds, then agreed on something neither had ever said aloud: one day each, turn about, and the other to keep the ledger and the hounds honest. It was a poor bargain, and the court laughed at it for years.
On the first morning of the new arrangement Corin left the crown on the windowsill of the east tower, where the sun would catch it. Ysolde climbed the stairs to find it already glinting, and beneath it, scratched into the stone with a nail in a looping hand, was the one word they had agreed to share: Gemini.
