Crown and script on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a crown with three arches and a dotted band sits beside a thin, looping script character on a finger. The linework is single weight and solid, with no shading. The photo is a close, slightly warm-toned crop against a dark background, showing only the finger.

The ewes have been lambing since before light, and you are on your knees in the straw at the back of the shed when the third one comes out blue and still. Uncle Dai is across the pen with the lantern, swearing softly at a ewe who will not stand. You clear the membrane from its nose with two fingers, the way he showed you, and blow once, sharp, into its face. Nothing. You blow again.

The ledger lives on a nail by the door, its pages swollen with damp and sheep dip. Every lamb born on Tallow Farm has a line in it, and beside the best of them, the ones that topped the autumn sale, Dai has pressed a little crown with his thumb stamp: three rounded arches, a dotted band beneath, the mark his father cut from a brass nail head. Beside the crown he writes a single letter, looping and leaning. This year's letter is M, for Mabel, the ewe who has given him more trouble than any beast in the valley and more luck than any other.
The lamb coughs, shakes its head like a wet dog, and bleats so loudly the ewe in the far pen turns round. Dai laughs and says it'll do. You stay on your knees a while longer in the warm reek of the place, listening to the snow tick against the tin roof.
When the sun comes up grey over the top field, you take the ledger down, dip the pen and draw the crown in the margin. Your hand is shaking from the cold, so the arches come out uneven, but you make the dots with care. Then you write the letter beside it, looping and leaning, and blot the page before the ink can run.
