Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink infinity symbol tattoo on the top of a bare foot, with the loops filled by script words reading daughter, love and mother. Decorative swirls and small heart shapes sit within the loops and around the lettering. The linework is solid black with no shading, set against pale skin and a soft grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tertia sat at the bench in Ostia with a wax tablet on her knee and a stylus she had already sharpened twice. The letter had to reach Londinium before the autumn ships stopped sailing, and she had promised her daughter Nonia a letter every month, though the last had been six weeks late. Her husband's cousin, a shipwright named Galba, was taking the tablet north in a sealed satchel with a bundle of papyrus for the bookseller.

She wrote the greeting, then scratched it out because it looked like a tax notice. She tried again. The words came slowly: the fig tree had fruited twice, the cat had stolen a fish from the fishmonger's basket and been beaten for it, and the blue cloak Nonia left behind was still folded on the chest by the door. Each line she read aloud under her breath, the way her own mother had taught her, so the sentences would not sound foreign when they arrived.

When she reached the end she found she could not sign with only her name. She wrote mater, then sat with the stylus hovering over the wax, and added the word that had been the reason for every letter since Nonia first went north with the soldiers' wives. She pressed it in carefully, looping the strokes back on themselves so the final letter ran into the first, a line with no end and no beginning, like a river drawn on a map by someone who had never seen it.

Galba took the satchel without asking what was in it. Tertia watched him go down the Via Ostiensis until the crowd swallowed his hat. The wax would cool and harden on the long voyage, and somewhere in Britannia a girl would break the seal with her thumb and read the closing line first, as she always did, and the loop would close around her.
