Crown key behind the ear

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a skeleton-style key with an ornate crown at the top and a simple cross-shaped bit at the bottom. The linework is clean and fine, with light shading inside the crown and along the shaft. The key sits vertically against pale skin behind the ear, with a hoop earring and dark hair framing the composition.

The padlock on the cabin chest had frozen overnight, so Nell spent the last of the light coaxing it with kettle water and a bent nail while the Marjorie Ann knocked gently against the lock beam below Stoke Bruerne. Her grandfather's key was in her other hand. It was no bigger than her thumb, its bow a tiny crown of worn points, its bit squared off like a cross. He had carried it on his watch chain for forty years and never once said what it opened.

The padlock gave with a sigh of rust. Inside, under a folded tarpaulin, sat a tin box stencilled with a name she didn't recognise, and beneath it a bundle of ration books tied with garden twine. Nobody had ever mentioned a second boat in the family. She turned the key over, feeling the grooves with her thumbnail, and the little cross fitted the tin's lock as if it had been waiting.

Inside the box, folded small, was a route chart of the cut marked in pencil, every lock ringed with a neat cross. At the bottom, in her grandfather's careful hand, were the words: the crown goes to whoever keeps the water moving. Nell laughed out loud, because she had spent the whole winter doing exactly that, and because the boat had been hers since March without anybody bothering to write it down.

She hung the key back on its chain and let the lamp swing above the table. The brass bow caught the light like a small coronet, and the cross-shaped bit knocked softly against the hull as the boat settled for the night.
