Small crown tattoo behind the ear
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black crown tattoo sits on the skin behind an ear, with the side of the head and loose hair visible. The crown is drawn in black ink with outlined arches, dotted details along the rim and a solid band at the base. The image is a close side view with soft, even lighting and a plain skin background.

Dorrie Hallam scrubbed the copper mould with a handful of sand while the *Marigold Rose* lurched off the Dogger Bank, the pans on their hooks swinging like a congregation keeping time. The mould had been her uncle's. It was a crown with arched sides, a rim pricked all round with little dots where he had pressed a nail into the copper, and a heavy band at the base that held the pudding together when it came out of the tin.

He had made Christmas pudding in it on every run to Reykjavik for twenty-two years, and he would not let anyone else touch the flour. "Men eat better from a crown," he used to say, and the deckhands would laugh and then go quiet when the slice came out whole and dark and shining on the plate. He died in the spring, in a bed in Grimsby, and the mould came to her in a sack with his good knife and a tin of barley sugar.
Sorley, the mate, wanted it gone. Copper fetched a fair price at the yard, he said, and the ship had no use for ornaments. Dorrie didn't argue. She simply made the batter that night, poured it into the crown in the lee of the galley stove, and wedged the lid down against the roll. In the morning the pudding turned out steady and whole, its base firm where the band had held it.
The crew ate it at the mess table without speaking, which Dorrie took as the highest praise a cook could get. Sorley came back for a second slice. When he had finished he took the mould from her hands, turned it once in the lamplight, and hung it back on its hook himself, the dots catching the light in a neat row.
