Crown tattoos reading His Queen and Her King
Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
The top photograph shows a grey shaded crown with beaded detailing and a dark cushion base, with His Queen in script beneath it. The lower photograph shows a similar crown with blue gem accents and soft grey shading, with Her King in script below it. Both pieces are shown as close crops on skin, with the script placed centrally under each crown.

The oven ticks over at four and I am already behind on the crowns. Two of them, one grey and one with blue sugar gems, are sitting on greaseproof paper like a pair of small promises I have to finish before the van arrives. Irene Lusk ordered them three weeks ago, leaning across my counter with flour on her coat sleeve, and asked me to make the words sharp enough to read from a pew. She did not say who they were for. She didn't have to. Everyone on Harrow Street knows Tomasz Lusk has been bringing her coffee from the corner stall every morning since the spring.

I pipe the first script with a steady hand and a cup of tea going cold beside the scales. The letters come out slanted the way Tomasz's father used to paint shop signs, which is what Irene wanted, and I lose myself in the loops of the H and the long tail of the K. The gems are the hard part. Each one is a dot of blue isomalt that has to set before it sags, so I work in small batches and keep the fan running, listening to the radio murmur about bin collections and rain.
When the light comes up grey over the bins, I carry the trays out to the front window to let them cool. The sun catches the blue gems first, then the grey crown beside it, and for a moment they look like they've been set down by somebody who meant to come back for them. I wrap each one in tissue, write the names on the lids in my own clumsy capitals, and go to unlock the door before the first customer starts knocking.
