A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every August the Hinton Flower Show handed out a little silver crown on a velvet cushion, and every August Walter Pike carried it home for his sweet peas. I had grown dahlias along my side of his fence for nine years and never once got within a ribbon of him. So when the schoolmaster's wife asked me over the tea urn whether I was going to be the one to unseat the king, I said nothing, went home, and dug up the whole bed.

Through September I fed the dahlias a brew of nettles and comfrey, pinched out side shoots at dawn, and kept the slugs off with a ring of crushed eggshell that Walter's ginger cat ignored entirely. The stems came up thick as broom handles. By the first week of August the blooms were the colour of cherry juice and the size of dinner plates, and Walter had taken to leaning on the fence to watch me work, his arms folded on the top rail like he owned the view.

On show morning he brought his sweet peas across in a bucket, offered me one, and said, 'Your dahlias have got the better of me, Ruth.' I told him the crown was his as long as he wanted it, and he laughed, then went quiet looking at the cushion on my trestle. The judges gave the silver to me. Walter took second and a tin of boiled sweets, and that evening a cutting from his best sweet pea came over the fence wrapped in wet newspaper, with a note in his square capitals that read only: LONG LIVE THE QUEEN OF THE BED.
