The queen's messenger reached the forge before the church bells, and Hetty Crane wiped her hands on her apron and read the letter twice. Her Majesty required a padlock for the north tower, a heart of silver, and a key that would open nothing else in the kingdom. Hetty had made locks for wool merchants and poor widows, but never for a crown, and she sat with the paper until the coals went grey.

She worked through the winter. The castle rose above the town like a held breath, its roofs furred with frost. Each morning she climbed the hill with her tools rolled in leather, and each evening the queen's ladies came down to collect the day's filings, counting them as though they were coins. The heart took nine weeks. Hetty cut the keyway in the shape of a single rose stem, thorn after thorn, so that only a hand that knew the pattern could turn it.

On the last night the queen came to the forge herself, the crown pushed back from her brow, her face pale from the stairs. She asked to hold the padlock. Hetty watched her turn it over in the lamplight, then fit the key and snap the shackle shut on nothing at all. "Who is it for?" Hetty asked. The queen smiled without warmth. "Myself. Some things should be kept where even I cannot reach them."

Hetty walked home with the spare key the queen had left on the bench. She never learned what the north tower guarded. Each spring the roses climbed the castle walls in a thicket no gardener could cut back, and the tower window stayed dark. Hetty kept the key on a cord beneath her collar, and on the coldest mornings she could still feel its teeth pressing against her breastbone, sharp as a thorn.
