Crystal ball on the wrist
Other · Mixed · Photo
A small crystal ball on a stand sits on the inner wrist, with a bold black outline and white highlights. The globe is filled with purple ink and dotted marks, and the black base has a white curved highlight. The photo is taken close up, with a clenched fist above the tattoo and a plain pale background.

So the widow Marrow kept her ball on a black stand by the kitchen window, where the forest came right up to the back gate and the oaks leaned in to look. Every evening the village children crowded round her table with their boots still wet from the bog path, and every evening she said the same thing. Don't breathe on it. The glass holds what you give it, and it remembers longer than you do.

Now the children of that village were a rough lot, and young Tobin Reed was the roughest. He breathed on it the first week, and the second, and on the third he dropped a crust of bread into the globe to see what would happen. Nothing happened, the widow said, except the dark inside went thick and purple as a bruise, and tiny white specks came swimming up like frost on a window. Tobin swore they were stars. Marrow only nodded and said stars were what the glass made when it was bored.
Then came the winter the lanterns froze, and Tobin's mother went out past the last fence to fetch the goats and did not come back before dark. The whole village stood at the forest edge with their torches guttering. Tobin ran to the widow's house, grabbed the ball in both hands, and held it up to the cold moon. Look, he said. Look where she is. And there, down among the dots, a single bright speck blinked, then moved, then came slow through the purple dark toward the gate.
Marrow, who had never once told a lie, said only that the glass had been waiting for someone to ask it properly.
