Crystal cluster on the forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a cluster of faceted crystal points, drawn with fine, precise outlines and light grey shading on their faces. The crystals overlap at different angles, with the largest point angled down towards the bottom right of the forearm. The design is in black and grey on a plain, lightly lit arm.

Dear Tom,

The cluster came up in the net on Tuesday, wedged in a lump of grey clay that Mr Pascoe swore was ballast from a wreck off the Scarrow reef. I knocked the clay away with the back of a teaspoon while the kettle boiled, and there it was: six points of clear quartz growing out of one stub, each face catching the window light so you could have read the tide tables through them. The largest one tips down and away, as if it was trying to get back into the rock.
I wrote to you about the sea caves last spring, didn't I? How the water goes green at the mouth and then black further in? Pascoe says the crystals only grow where the cold water seeps through the cracks and sits long enough to forget itself. I told him that sounded like a poem, and he said it sounded like a lot of waiting.
I've put it on the windowsill above the sink. In the mornings the light goes through the points and throws thin lines across the drying cloths, and I keep thinking you'd make a joke about me being a magpie. Come home at Christmas and I'll give you the smaller piece I kept back, the one with the chip. You can take it out to sea again if you like. Just don't lose it to the fish.
Love, Nell
