The snow had buried the north road by four o'clock, and Marta Fenn was still counting the lamps in the stable when the bell over the inn door rang twice, the way it did for people who had given up on the pass. She went through to the taproom with a cloth over her shoulder. A surveyor stood at the hearth, stamping slush from his boots, a roll of drawings tucked under one arm like a loaf.

"Wolves," he said, before she could ask. "Up on the shelf above Hollin Beck. Three nights of them. My mules won't go past the bridge."

Marta had heard the howling for a week. It rose from the fell in long, stacked notes, and at the end of each one it broke, as if the animal had reached the edge of something and found no way over. She poured him a measure of the brown spirit her father had distilled and watched him unroll the paper on the bar. Angles were drawn in hard black ink, the beasts' heads built of planes that met at sharp points, every corner ending in a tiny dot where the surveyor had lifted his pen. "They're not real," she said.

"They're exact," he said. "That's the trouble. Look, here's the ridge. Here's the wolf that stands on it."

Near dawn the howling came again, closer, and the surveyor went quiet. Marta stood at the window with the lamp, and out in the white she saw the shape of one animal, head thrown back, every line of it sharp against the snow. She did not wake the others. She only took the drawing from the bar and folded it small, and when the sun came up the pass was open and the surveyor was gone, leaving his measure full.
