Small finger tattoos of a star and triangles

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are crossed over each other, showing several small tattoos on the fingers. A tiny star sits on one finger, a pair of interlocking triangles on another, and a blue-grey block shape on a third, all in simple linework with light shading. The ink is black and grey, and the image is set against a pale lace top with rings and bangles.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the lamp, because the old tale wants the dark to be properly dark. Nobody in Gallowmere Reach tells it the same way twice, but they all agree on the star. Back when the orbital ring still turned over Tessel Basin, a girl called Ysolde Marr kept the signal relay on the lowest deck, and she had one small black star pricked onto the side of her first finger so she could find her own hand in the dark of the maintenance shafts.

Her grandmother had drawn it for her with a sewing needle and soot. Beside it, two triangles locked point to point, which meant nothing to the engineers but everything to the fishers who still rowed out past the breakwater. The square on the next finger was the hatch code for the salt store, a shape you could find by touch when the lights went. Ysolde could read a hatch in the pitch dark faster than any man with a lamp.

When the ring cracked in the third winter, the signal died and the shafts filled with cold air. Ysolde walked the lower decks counting hatches by their squares, tapping each one with her marked hand, while the people behind her listened to the tapping and followed it toward the stairs. She reached the surface with eleven families and a child asleep on her back.

They say the star still sits in the carvings at the Reach, and that if you lock your fingers together in the dark, the triangles will tell you which way is up. Mind, that's only storytellers talking. Now let the lamp burn down, and somebody fetch the salt.
