Cubist face on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A cubist-style face is drawn across the calf, with fragmented planes of skin tone, blue, grey and black. Two or three eyes sit at different angles, and a red mouth and a small blue teardrop shape add detail. Bold black outlines and flat colour fills dominate, and the design wraps neatly around the leg against a plain pale wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer, you lot, and mind the guy ropes. Now, the painter who came with the Harvest Fair that summer had no talent for faces, the old hands said, because he could never keep one in one piece. He'd sit a sitter down in the booth behind the bumper cars, set his easel in the wind, and by the second hour the nose had gone off to the left and the mouth had slid down towards the chin like butter off a hot plate.

Mrs Ansell from the candy stall sat for him first, that I know for certain, since she told the whole ground about it. She came out with one eye on the sky and the other on the coconut shy, and she swore the painter had looked at her so long that she had seen herself three ways at once. Her eyes, she said, had sorted themselves into a row, each one fixed on a different thing that mattered.

Then there was the business with the tears. He would not paint a tear without a reason, and the reason was always the one the sitter had not mentioned. For Mrs Ansell it was a small blue drop beside the mouth, no bigger than a boiled sweet, and she wept over it for a week, though nobody on the ground could say what she was grieving.

The last morning the painter packed his easel and left the canvas face down in the mud. When the lads turned it over, the picture had changed. Every eye in it was open, and every one was looking at the fairground gate, as if someone were still expected through it.
