The snow had already closed the high road when Marta Cavell buttoned the letter inside her son's coat and made him promise to keep one hand on the wall the whole way over. Tomas nodded at the door, though he knew the wall ran out before the first bend, and after that there was only the drover's track, which nobody had trusted since the winter the mule went through the ice.

The old men said the track had been laid by a drover who never lifted his stick from the ground. He had walked from the lower valley to the summit and down the far side without once stopping, and wherever his stick turned, the path curled round in a long loop, so that a traveller crossing Carrow Pass went round the same bend twice before the summit and never quite reached the place he was aiming for.

Tomas lost the light by the third curl. He counted the turns out loud the way his grandmother had taught him, one for each loop, and at the place where the path crossed its own line he stopped, because a lantern was moving up towards him through the snow, following the same tight turns he had walked. It was his brother Anton, who had read the letter that morning in the far village and had come up the drover's track without waiting for the thaw.

They stood at the crossing with the snow falling between them. Neither of them opened the letter. Tomas said the words his mother had written into it, and Anton laughed and said that was the same thing she always said to him, and they walked down together, turning the same loops in the lantern light.
