Cursive script tattoo on a lower back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a person's side and lower back showing a small cursive script tattoo in black ink, with the words only partly legible because the line runs out of frame. The linework is thin and even, with a slightly soft, faded look. The warm, dim lighting and dark lace waistband frame the tattoo against the skin.

The abbess ruled the scriptorium by a single rule, and it was never written down. When I asked why the gall-ink had to be thinned with rainwater from the north cistern rather than the well, Mother Hild set down her quill and looked at me over her spectacles until I felt the cold of the flagstones through my sandals.

"Because I say so," she said, and went back to the Gospel of Mark. I was twenty and furious. I took the rule for vanity, a way of keeping the young men in their place, so for three weeks I mixed the ink with well water out of spite and watched the hairlines of my capitals sink and spread like breath on glass.
On the first hard frost of Advent the well froze solid. I took a pail north, cracking the skin of ice with my heel, and found the cistern black and still under its cover. Kneeling there with the cold seeping through my habit, I understood that she had never cared about the ink. The north path ran past the bakehouse and the kitchen window, where a lamp burned all night, and the well sat in the open yard where no one could see a fall in the dark.
I still thin the ink with rainwater. When the new boys ask me why, I tell them nothing, and I watch them go out to the north cistern at dusk with their pails, and I light the kitchen lamp myself.
