Small script tattoo on the upper thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph taken from behind shows a person in black briefs with both hands on their hips. A small black script tattoo sits on the upper thigh, below the buttock, and is shown in a dark ink with clean edges. The image is mostly warm skin tones against a pale background, with gold chain jewellery across the thigh and a gold watch and rings on the hands.

Nell Harrow had counted the links of the mooring chain every morning since her father's barge went under the Blackfriars arch with a cargo of coal and no one at the tiller. The chain was the only thing that came back up from the Thames that winter, heavy and green, and the ferryman's wife sold it to her for a shilling because nobody else wanted anything that smelled of the river.

She scrubbed it with vinegar and sand on the roof of the hold, working each link until the brass showed through. Tucked in the tin box under her bunk was a letter from a chain-maker in Rotherhithe, written in a looping hand she could barely read. It said only that the links had been forged for a man named Sayed Quinlan, who paid in gold guineas and never once gave an address. She read the lines over until the words stopped looking like words and became shapes, a hook and a tail, the way a bargeman's knot becomes a bird if you stare long enough.
In March she took two of the links to a goldsmith on Lambeth Walk, who melted them down and cast a bracelet thin enough to slide over the wrist of anyone who asked. Nobody asked. A widow bought the rest by the yard for a wedding that never happened. The goldsmith kept the last length on his bench, and when Nell returned for the ledger he showed her the mark stamped on the clasp, the same looping script, and told her it meant held fast in a language he had picked up from the dock men.
That night she tied the chain across the stern, let the tide lift it, and felt the barge settle beneath her feet. Her father had never once tied a knot that held. She decided it was enough that this one did.
