Fine line black script lettering on the side of a hip, just above black lace underwear.

Script lettering on a hip

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a person's side and hip showing a small piece of cursive script lettering in dark ink. The fine, single-weight linework runs diagonally across the skin, and only part of the wording is clearly legible. The image is warm and dimly lit, with the tattoo as the main point of focus against the skin and black lace waistband.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourselves down, the band's only tuning and nobody's dancing yet. You'll want the story of the card, the one Nell Carrow kept in her glove box for forty years. Her father had put his foot down about the Saturday socials at the Palais, so she promised Walter Feeney she would come, then sent word through the cloakroom girl that she could not. Walter didn't believe a word of it. He stood by the pillar in his good brown suit every week for a month, watching the door.

Then one wet Thursday a card came up to the bandstand, folded twice, the pencil gone silver at the creases. Nell had written in that tidy hand she'd learned from a convent sister who rapped knuckles: Because I said I would. Nothing else. No name, no time. Old Sid Mabey, the bandleader, read it aloud over the microphone before the first waltz, because he thought it was the grandest thing he'd ever seen a girl do with a pencil.

Walter came. Nell came. Her father came too, and stood by the same pillar with his arms folded, and by the last waltz he was dancing with the caretaker's wife and looking pleased about it.

Walter kept that card in his wallet until the paper wore soft as cloth and the pencil faded to a ghost. Nell's glove box was empty by then, but the words never went anywhere: Because I said I would.
