Cursive script word on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single lowercase word is written in thin black cursive script across the inner forearm. The linework is fine and even, with a small loop on the letters and a slight upward flourish at the end. The skin is lit softly against a green textured blanket and pale fabric, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame.

She read it twice and said it wasn't a word at all. He said it was whatever the customer had paid for. A widow in Walthamstow had sent the order by post, a single line in pencil with a half sovereign folded inside the envelope. The foreman wanted the spelling checked against a dictionary. Haddow had found nothing in any dictionary, and the longer he looked the more the word seemed to lean on him, as if it had waited all winter in the shop for someone to take it seriously.

Ada set down her broom and held out her hand for the pen. She did not correct the spelling. Instead she bent over the card and added a small loop to the first l, the way her mother had written her name on the back of every letter she sent home to Cork. Haddow watched the ink dry in the lamplight and said nothing about the price.

In the morning the card went out on the post cart, bound for a house he would never see, carrying a word nobody in the city could have read aloud with any confidence. That, he decided, was exactly what the widow had wanted.
