Dad script with feather on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the word Dad written in black cursive script, with a large feather drawn diagonally beneath and to the right of the lettering. The feather uses grey shading and fine dark linework to show its barbs and quill. The design sits on pale skin against a plain background.

The lift at Cold Haven pit went down at six and came up at two, and the women of Tanner Row learned to read the hours by the rattle of its chain. Nell Sutter's husband Walter went down with the rest one grey February morning, and she stood at the pithead gate with her shawl pulled tight while a pigeon dropped from the winding-house rafters and landed at her boots.

Mab Corrie, who had buried two husbands and a son, picked up the feather the bird let fall and told her what the old men said: that a feather laid on the threshold of a pit was a message carried down to the men by something the gas and the falling stone could not touch. Nell did not believe it. She tucked the feather into her hat band anyway, because it was soft and pale and the only thing that day that was not black with coal.
Walter came up at two with a crushed hand and a cut above one eye, and he came up. The next morning, when Nell swept the step, there was another feather on the stone, longer, with a dark quill, and beside it someone had scratched a word into the wet grit with a stick. Her daughter Ada, who was six and had only just learned her letters at the chapel school, admitted she had done it. The word was Dad, and she had made the D twice to be sure.
Nell never found out which bird had come down the shaft. But from that day Ada set a feather on the step each dawn for the man going down, and each evening Walter came up the lane and bent to take it from her hand before he went in to wash.
