Infinity symbol with Dad on the foot
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A teal and black infinity symbol curves across the top of a foot, with the word Dad written in cursive script inside the loop. A small red heart sits beside the lettering, and the toes and nail polish are visible at the lower edge of the frame. The linework is thin and clean against the pale skin, with the teal shading adding colour to one side of the loop.

Nobody on Halden Ring believed the water loop could ever be made to close, and my grandmother called that the first lie the engineers ever told us. They drew it on every bulkhead anyway, a figure of eight lying on its side, one curl of pipe running into the other. Tobias Quill traced it with his thumb each time he passed, and he painted the upper curve the colour of deep sea, because he had seen the sea once from a shuttle window. Every drop in the ring, he told his daughter, had already been a river, a tear, a glass of somebody's tea, and would be again.

Wren learned valves and gauges from him in the crawlspace behind the galley. He marked each repair he was proud of with a small red heart in marker, and when she asked why, he said a heart was the part of a machine nobody else could see. She laughed at him for that. She laughed less in the dry season when the lower pumps began to stutter, and he went down with a spanner and did not come back up.
The council called it an accident and gave her his post. For a season she worked the valves alone, listening to the water hum through the teal pipe like a voice repeating itself. Then she found his logbook wedged behind a cracked gauge. Every page closed the same way, with the loop, a neat line through its centre, and a red mark at the join. The last entry was in shaking pencil. The loop is not a trap, it said. Find where it crosses itself, and step across. It was signed Dad.
She went down to the junction where the two curves met and found a valve no schematic showed. She turned it. The water hissed, then rang along the teal pipe like a bell, and far below a pump that had been silent for a year began to turn. Wren pressed her palm to the warm metal, drew the loop in the condensation with a small red dot beside it, and watched the light come up through it.
