Infinity symbol with Dad script on a foot

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

A fine black outline forms an infinity symbol with the word Dad written in cursive script inside its right loop. A teal shaded band runs along part of the infinity line, and a small red heart sits beneath the loop. The tattoo is shown in close view on the top of a bare foot against a dark background, with red nail polish visible on the toes.

You find the timetable at half past eleven, folded into quarters and tucked behind the sun visor of the van where he always kept it. The night route loops the ring road from the depot at Attercliffe and back again, eleven stops, forty minutes a circuit, and his handwriting runs down the margin in blue biro, a name beside every stop. You have never seen him write in cursive before. The loops are the only part of the page that looks like him.

The depot man says the service is cancelled from Monday and the last driver to take the route out was your dad. He tells you the lads used to call it the endless one, because you could drive it all night and still end up where you started. You stand under the sodium lights on the forecourt with the timetable in your hand and the engine ticking as it cools. A slick of diesel by the bay catches the light, teal and black, the same colour as the ink on the page.

You count the circuits you can read: a woman who left a red glove on the seat at Hillsborough, a lad who sang the whole way to Darnall, a passenger he waited for at the Wicker Arches when the rain came sideways. Each one has a small pencilled tick. Under the final row he has drawn a tiny heart, pressed so hard the biro has torn the paper, and beneath it the name of the last stop, which is the stop outside your own flat.

You fold the timetable back into quarters and climb into the cab. The seat still holds the shape of him. You pull out past the barrier, take the first loop the way he would have, and keep driving round the ring road until the sky goes grey over the works, not quite ready to arrive anywhere.
