Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a tattoo on the inner forearm showing an infinity symbol with the script words life and love in its two loops. A shaded feather lies across the centre of the infinity sign, with its quill running horizontally. The linework is thin and dark, with soft grey shading on the feather, and the skin and background are out of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The grain-keeper's son came to the reed house the morning after the flood, asking for a word that would not end. Anu had cut her pens from river cane for twenty summers and had never been asked for such a thing, so she sat him down on the mat and thought about it while the water dripped off the eaves.

She took a grey feather that the current had left in the reeds, a heron's by its length, and dipped her pen in soot and gall. She drew a loop lying on its side, the way the river bent back on itself below the ferry steps. Into one curl she wrote life, and into the other she wrote love, and where the two rings crossed she laid the feather across the join. A feather had come down out of the sky, she told him, so it already knew how to cross from one side to the other.

The boy asked why it had no start and no finish. Anu said that anything given away properly goes round and comes back, and that a thing which comes back has no place to stop. He thanked her with a dried fish and a jar of barley, and carried the tablet down to the ferry, where his father was waiting on the far bank with a cart and a debt to be paid. The ferryman read it, laughed, and let them both across for nothing.

Years later the reed house had fallen in and been built again, and the wall with the loop was still there. Children who passed it ran a finger along the curl of life and then the curl of love, and never once lifted the feather, which was lighter than anything else in the town.
