Infinity feather with life and love script
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an infinity symbol with the words life and love written in cursive script within its loops, with a shaded feather lying across the centre. The linework is fine and delicate, and soft grey shading gives the feather depth and texture. The black and grey ink sits on pale skin, and the photograph is cropped to the forearm against a blurred background.

Sit closer, the fire is only warm on this side. Brother Anselm kept the scriptorium at Saint Oswin's for forty winters, and he never once let a novice cut a quill from a wing he had not first washed in lye and dried by the window. Geese, he said, were the only honest teachers, because they gave you their feathers without asking what you meant to write.

The boy who came up the hill in the hungry spring was called Tobiah, and he had hands like a thief's, quick and restless. Anselm set him to copying the Psalter, and Tobiah hated every curl of it until the day he was told to write the word for the thing that never ends. He drew a loop on the vellum, lying on its side, then another loop threaded through it, and the ink ran thin wherever his nerves ran thin. 'Forever is only a shape,' Anselm said, 'and a shape has to be lived inside, or it is just a bent line.'
Then the old man sent him out to the orchard with a fresh grey feather from the pond geese and told him to write on the wind what he could not write on the page. Tobiah spoke LIFE into the first loop and LOVE into the second, and laid the feather across the crossing where the two curves met. When he came back the wind had taken it, and the vellum was blank.
Anselm laughed until he coughed and said the feather had gone exactly where it was meant to go, which was out into the world, and that the copy was finished. Years later a pilgrim swore he saw a grey feather turning slow inside a figure of eight above the abbey gate, and the monks said it was only the wind keeping its own accounts.
