Daffodils with purple stars on upper back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two open yellow daffodils with a closed bud, long green stems and leaves curving across the skin. A soft purple wash with small pale star-like flecks sits behind the blooms. The shading is smooth and realistic, with bright yellow petals, deep green foliage and a centred composition over the shoulder blade.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The first daffodils came up along the cottage wall the same week the gulls started nesting on the gallery rail, and my father said that was how you knew spring had got past the rocks at last. Mum had planted the bulbs in October from a paper bag she bought in Penzance, swearing they would never take in the salt wind. They took. By March the yellow trumpets were leaning over the path as if they were trying to read the sea.

At dusk the sky over the Atlantic went the colour of bruised plums, and the first stars pricked out above the water before the lamp was even lit. I would sit on the wall with my knees up and count them, losing my place every time the beam swung round and washed the stars out. Father never cared for counting. He cared for the lamp, the oil, the brass, and the logbook where every ship that passed got a line in his neat hand.

That year one bud on the end stem would not open. It sat green and tight through the whole of April while its sisters faded into papery crowns. Father said some flowers wanted the dark to be finished before they would commit, and he went up the tower without another word about it. The next evening I carried the pot up the one hundred and twelve steps, my breath loud in the stairwell, and set it on the sill of the lamp room.

The lamp came round. Its light slid across the glass, over the stems and the closed bud, and I held my breath the way I did when I was small and sure something was about to happen. Father stood behind me with the logbook open. Then the petals loosened, one edge first, and the bud unfolded into gold in the turning light, and he wrote the time down as if a ship had come in.
