Dalmatian puppy tattoos in a collage
Traditional · Mixed · Photo
The collage shows four photographs of Dalmatian puppy tattoos. The largest piece shows two puppies in an ornate yellow frame with a blue rose, with grey shading on the puppies and a brick-like background and colour in the frame and rose. The three smaller pieces are a black linework puppy in a seated pose, a small outlined puppy, and a coloured puppy head with a red tongue.

Dear Aunt Hesba,

The snow has shut the Crown Pass since Tuesday, so we have had nothing but the two dogs and the fire for company. The bitch from the carrier's wagon left her litter with us in November, and the pair of them are now as big as hams and twice as stubborn. Father says they are for the sale at Lent. I have stopped listening to him on that subject.
Last night the lamp in the back parlour guttered out and I found them curled in front of the hearth, nose to tail, one with his chin resting on the other's back as if he were keeping watch. Someone had left the stable door open and the drift had blown in across the flags. Their coats were white with it. I did not have the heart to shift them, so I sat on the settle with my feet tucked under me and read Mr Pennick's almanac by their light.
This morning the blue rose in the gilt frame above the mantel looked grey with frost on the glass. It is Mother's print, the one she bought in Carlisle the year before she died. I thought the scrollwork dreadful when I was small. Now I find I like how the brick of the chimney shows through the painted petals when the firelight catches them.
The road should be open by Thursday, the carrier says. I have told the dogs. They did not seem to mind, and I suspect they will be just as glad to see the back of us as we are of them. Do write, and tell me whether the rectory has thawed.
Yours in the cold, Margaret
